Steam, score with care, lift. Often slow. Always patient. The drywall stays intact.
Builders sometimes hang over hung paper. We work the layers down, identify when to switch from steam to chemical, and reset the wall.
Older Type II vinyls with their backing left behind. We strip the face, soak the backing, and lift it cleanly.
The most common mistake amateur removal jobs make is to score aggressively. Tiger-Tooth scoring tools score the drywall along with the paper. We use the lightest scoring tool the paper allows, soak the seam from the back, and let the paste give up before we pull.
Where the previous installer skipped a sealing primer and the paper has welded itself to the drywall paper face, we'll often recommend skim and re-prime in lieu of a slow strip — same finished result, less risk.
Removal usually runs one to four days per room. We leave the wall primed and ready for the next paper, paint, or finish.
After removal we patch any drywall pulls, skim where the surface needs unification, and apply a fresh sealing primer. The wall is paper-ready for the next install, or paint-ready if you're going a different direction.
Most clients book removal as the first half of a residential ticket — strip the old, install the new, all in one continuous project. Some clients want removal alone, then live with primed walls for a few months while they decide on the next paper. Either is fine.
